40cm x 40cm filter pads made for 40x40 plate filters. Pads rated 0.45 micron remove 99.9% of bacteria, which is considered sterile filtration.
Please note that all pad filters are rated 'nominal', meaning that about 90-95% of all particulate matter at the micron rating will be filtered out. There will always be a little bit of smaller material that is also filtered out, as well as some larger material that will make it through. Typically speaking, the smaller the pore size the greater the percentage of material it will capture at the pad's micron rating. That said, the only truly sterile filtration method is with a pleated cartridge, which has an "absolute" rating instead of a "nominal" one, meaning that nothing larger than the stated pore size will pass through the filter media.
The filters can be sterilized by in-line steam, auto-claving, dry heat, hot water or chemical methods. We choose to run Saniclean (CL27) solution through the pads followed by sterile water or a small amount of wine that is then discarded. After the solution is run through the pads, and the pads have softened, the filter will need to be re-tightened.
Each pad has an exit side (indicated by stamped-in mfg product number) and an entry side. Wine should enter the pads on the entry side and leave on the exit side. A closer examination of your filter will show you how wine enters and exits the plates and how to determine the directions the pads should go.
On the 40x40 filters we sell, the pads should be placed in the filter in an alternating pattern that starts with the exit side (stamped in product number) facing away from the pump. The next pad should be placed with the exit side (stamped in product number) facing the pump. The pad direction will then alternate thereafter.
